The Mediterranean region faces urgent soil challenges that directly impact food security, ecosystems, and climate resilience. From erosion, salinization, and desertification to urbanization and land sealing, soil degradation threatens both livelihoods and biodiversity. At the same time, innovative solutions in sustainable land management, restoration, and digital monitoring offer promising pathways forward.
This one-day hybrid workshop, organised by the European Commission’s EU Soil Observatory (EUSO) together with the FAO, will bring together stakeholders from science, policy, and practice to:
- Explore the functions and ecosystem services of Mediterranean soils
- Examine key threats to soil health including climate change impacts
- Share solutions and innovations, from conservation agriculture to digital soil tools
- Discuss policy frameworks and cross-border collaboration
- Engage in a multi-stakeholder panel with experts from science, policy, and farming communities
The workshop provides a platform to reflect on the latest research, exchange practical experiences, and strengthen cooperation for more sustainable and resilient Mediterranean soils.
