In the wake of climate, several shifts and changes continue to be noticed in the agricultural sector from changing weather patterns to soil degradations in various forms. Thus, healthy soils are fundamental to sustainable agricultural production, food security, climate resilience, and ecosystem services in Africa. However, the continent faces increasing challenges related to soil degradation, declining fertility, erosion, and climate-induced changes that affect soil productivity. Effective soil health monitoring is therefore critical for informed decision-making, policy formulation, and sustainable land management.
One of the major constraints to effective soil monitoring in Africa is the lack of harmonized soil data standards and interoperable data systems. Soil data across the continent are often fragmented, collected using different methodologies, stored in incompatible formats, and not easily accessible for research, policy, or development planning.
The African Union Soil Observatory (AUSO) project funded by the European Commission under the European Mission Soil seeks to address this challenge by strengthening soil data systems across Africa through the development of harmonized soil information system frameworks, standardized data protocols, and interoperable platforms. AUSO aims to improve soil monitoring, support evidence-based agricultural policies, and enhance sustainable soil information system management across the continent.
To support this effort, a webinar on “Data Standards for Improved Soil Health Monitoring in Africa” is to be organized to raise awareness, facilitate knowledge exchange, and engage stakeholders on the importance of harmonized soil data standards within the AUSO framework and drawing lessons from the European Soil Observatory (EUSO).
