Educational exhibition “Beneath the Surface: The Secret Life of Soil”

The educational exhibition “Below the Surface: The Secret Life of Soil” reveals the hidden world beneath our feet and highlights the importance of preserving healthy and fertile soil for a resilient future.

Developed through the project LOESS by the Centre for the Promotion of Science, this exhibition invites visitors of all ages to explore the universe below our feet from March 20th to April 23rd at the Science Club Belgrade, Serbia (address: Kralja Petra 46a). Visitors will be able to participate in guided tours from Monday to Friday, from 3-7PM, and on Saturdays 11-7PM. Admission is free. Language of the exhibition is Serbian and English.

Soil is not just the ground we walk on – it is a living and dynamic ecosystem where processes essential for life on Earth are taking place. While its formation takes thousands of years, changes and degradation can occur surprisingly quickly. The exhibition emphasizes the importance of understanding and protecting soil, highlighting its role in providing food, water, and environmental stability.

During the exhibition, an accompanying program will include educational workshops, lectures and film screenings. Workshops for primary and secondary school children offer an interactive journey through the layers of soil – from tiny organisms and the processes that take place within it to contemporary challenges related to preserving soil health. The workshops will also explore how we can ensure that our soil remains healthy, fertile, and resilient.

Individual visitors and small groups do not need to register, the exhibition can be visited during the working hours. Registrations for workshops are closed - invitations are distributed directly to local primary and secondary schools.

The exhibition is organized within the framework of the European project LOESS – Literacy Boost through an Operational Educational Ecosystem of Societal Actors on Soil Health, which aims to improve education on soil health by developing programs and teaching resources for implementation across Europe.
