Our relationship with soil reflects how we perceive the world and our place within it. Moving beyond an anthropocentric understanding of soil has become a necessity in a landscape dominated by industrial, monocultural agriculture, a system that undermines the planetary processes essential for all life.

What role should science play in transforming the way we think and act? What kinds of sciences do our suffering soils demand from us? What knowledge do we need to survive the Anthropocene?

In this lecture, environmental anthropologist Prof. Anna Krzywoszyńska will explore new approaches to soil science that can help us build better relationships with the non-human beings that co-create our world. Drawing on the thought of Bruno Latour, Isabelle Stengers, and Hannah Arendt, the lecture will reflect on the politics of science and our relationship with the environment. Together, we will ask how to care for soil life and cultivate attentiveness in the face of the vast destruction of these multi-species ecosystems.

About the speaker

Anna Krzywoszyńska is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Oulu, Finland. She is an interdisciplinary social scientist specializing in human–environment relations, drawing from the humanities, soil science, agroecology, and environmental knowledge. Her research focuses on the role of science and other forms of knowledge in shaping human–environment interactions, particularly in relation to soil; the co-production of environmental knowledge and governance by science and society; and the role of local food systems. Her work is grounded in more-than-human anthropology and Anthropocene studies.

Prof. Krzywoszyńska currently serves as Co-Chair of the “Humanities and Social Sciences” Commission of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) and is a board member of the Horizon Europe research mission “Soil Deal for Europe.” Since the beginning of this year, she has been co-leading SAFIRE, a major interdisciplinary research programme on environmental renewal at the University of Oulu.
