Do you care about the future of our soils? Do you have a creative eye for photography? Then the Mission Soil photo competition is for you!

Show your passion for the protection and restoration of soil by submitting a photo that captures its beauty, complexity and importance. Your contribution could help raise awareness on the vital role that soil plays for people, nature and the planet.

To enter the competition, you must submit a photo that illustrates what soil means to you. The photos can be of any type, from close-up shots to sweeping landscapes.

The submission deadline is 8 October 2023.

Prizes and eligibility

The 12 best photos will be displayed at the European Mission Soil Week from 21 to 23 November 2023 in Madrid. The authors of the three best photos will win a trip to the European Mission Soil Week, including transport and accommodation. The remaining nine photos will be exhibited in Madrid and their photographers will receive sets of gardening tools.

The competition is open to anyone who is 18 or older and living in the EU.

About the European Mission Soil Week and the Mission Soil

The European Mission Soil Week is organised by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI), in the context of the Mission Soil together with the EU-funded project PREPSOIL and the Joint Research Centre – EU Soil Observatory (EUSO). The conference will be hosted by INIA-CSIC at the central facilities of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid, Spain, under the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council.

The European Mission Soil Week is a major gathering that brings together the European soil community. Researchers, policymakers, farmers, foresters, spatial planners, landowners and land managers, businesses, and organisations as well as the general public will meet to discuss the challenges for making and keeping EU soils healthy.

The Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ (Mission Soil) is an initiative under Horizon Europe, the EU framework programme for research and innovation. The main goal of the Mission Soil is to establish 100 living labs and lighthouses to lead the transition towards healthy soils by 2030. It aims at protecting and restoring soil health, as well as raising awareness and ensuring the long-term health and productivity of soils on all types of land.
