Provincial Council of Almería, Spain, signs the Mission Soil Manifesto

On 20 February 2024, the Provincial Council of Almería, Spain, signed the Mission Soil Manifesto at the European Parliament in Brussels, pledging its support to the European Union’s efforts to preserve and improve soil health. 

Almería's Provincial Council President, Javier A. García, formally endorsed the Manifesto alongside Michael Niejahr, the Mission Soil Manager and Acting Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission. 

During the ceremony, President García affirmed Almería's unwavering commitment to collaborate with the EU in soil protection and restoration initiatives, recognising soil as a cornerstone of European prosperity and well-being. He stressed the urgency to combat desertification and ensure sustainable agricultural production.  

The Mission Soil Manager welcomed Almería to the growing community of more than 2,600 citizens and organizations that have already signed the Mission Soil Manifesto. He highlighted the strong territorial dimension of the EU Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ and the key role that regions, provinces and municipalities play in improving soil health. The Mission Manager recalled the importance of cooperation between the various levels of governance for the implementation of sustainable land management practices and acknowledged the increasing interest of regional and local authorities in addressing soil health challenges.
