The Regional Government of Andalusia signs the Mission Soil Manifesto

Friday, 17 May 2024

During the annual assembly of the EU-funded project Healthy Municipal Soils (HuMUS) in Granada, the Government of Andalusia showed Andalusia’s commitment to soil health by signing the Mission Soil Manifesto.

By signing the Manifesto, the Andalusian Government joins a network of 2 500 organisations, institutions, businesses and citizens that care for soil. The Spanish region participates in HuMUS through the Agency for the management of agriculture and fisheries of Andalusia (AGAPA), along with 17 other European partners.

During the event, two municipalities of the Italian region of Tuscany, Calenzano and Fiesole, had the opportunity to share their experiences and to sign the Manifesto.

The Delegate of the Government of the Region of Andalusia in Granada, and the Secretary General of Agriculture, Livestock and Food of the Government of Andalusia, highlighted that the region’s ultimate aim is to promote practices that improve soil health and equip farmers and ranch owners with the tools they need to restore soil health.

More than 50 people attended the ceremony and learned about the regional plans to improve soil health. They also learned about the experiences of other Spanish institutions and organisations and of Italian municipalities like Fiesole. These pioneers have established bio-districts, where various stakeholders collaborate for sustainable resource management, using the principles of organic farming and agro-ecology.

HuMUS project will establish participatory processes in regions and municipalities, such as Sierra Nevada and the Granada Altiplano in Andalusia, that will lead to the co-creation of territorial agreements for the implementation of sustainable land management practices.

Following the ceremony, several more Spanish municipalities and local administrations have signed the Manifesto, demonstrating a collective dedication to soil health (find all the legal entities that have signed the Manifesto).

The Mission Soil is mobilising a fast-growing community of regions and municipalities that care and act for soil protection and restoration.
