On 10 April 2025, the European Parliament and Council negotiators reached a provisional political agreement on the Commission’s proposal for a soil monitoring law. The overall objective is to have healthy European soils by 2050, in line with the EU’s “zero pollution” ambition. The new law should also provide for a more coherent and harmonised EU framework for soil monitoring.

The MOOC ‘Soil education: an integrated STEM approach’, developed by the Mission Soil project LOESS with the support of Scientix®, has officially concluded. The good news is that the course content is now freely available on the European Schoolnet Academy for educators interested in innovative STEM teaching practices through soil education.

On December 10, during the Agri-Food Days in Brussels, Commissioners Christophe Hansen (Agriculture and Food) and Jessika Roswall (Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy) signed the Mission Soil Manifesto, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to preserving and restoring soil health.

The European Mission Soil Week organised by Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI), in collaboration with the Joint Research Center (JRC) - EU Soil Observatory (EUSO), Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) and Research Executive Agency (REA), held in Brussels from November 12 to 14, 2024, was a success, attracting 250 onsite and almost 300 online participants through live streaming.

To address this challenge, the Mission Soil Ambassadors programme was created, bringing together passionate soil advocates from across Europe. Using their expertise and communication skills, they aim to enhance soil literacy, inspire action, and drive progress towards the Mission's goals.
