The European Mission Soil Week (EMSW) is the annual gathering of the EU Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ (Mission Soil). The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and restoring soil health and to encourage action to improve soil health. This major event will take place between 21 and 23 November 2023 in Madrid, Spain.

The European Commission will invest €90 million in 17 new research projects contributing to the EU Mission: ‘A Soil Deal for Europe'. These projects will work on restoring and protecting soil health for the sustainable production of healthy food, protecting biodiversity, building climate resilience, and contributing to the European Green Deal objectives. The projects gather 314 participants from 32 countries.

During their first two years, the EU Missions in Horizon Europe have supported the Commission's work on the European Green Deal, making Europe fit for the Digital Age, and Europe's Beating Cancer Plan. The Missions are on track to achieve their ambitious goals by 2030 in critical areas such as adaptation to climate change, improving the life of cancer patients, cleaning up the marine and freshwater ecosystems, making cities climate-neutral, and making soils healthy.

On 5 July, the Commission adopted a package of measures for a sustainable use of key natural resources, which will also strengthen the resilience of EU food systems and farming. The measures include the proposal for the first-ever EU legislation on soils - a soil monitoring law. The law will put the EU on a pathway to healthy soils by 2050, by gathering data on the health of soils and making it available to farmers and other soil managers.

On 18 April, the European Commission and the European Regions Research and Innovation Network (ERRIN) held the launch event of the Mission Soil Manifesto. The launch event was a key milestone for the success of the EU Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’.

Following the adoption of the Horizon Europe 2023-2024 Work Programme, the European Commission has launched new calls for 2023 worth over €600 million to support research and innovation under the five EU Missions – Adaptation to Climate Change, Cancer, Restore our Ocean and Waters, Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities and A Soil Deal for Europe.
